Every October, Arts Clayton proudly participates in the Atlanta Celebrates Photography Festival and hosts the Annual Juried Photography Show and Competition. Now in its fifth year, Georgia photographers are invited to submit their very best work to the annual competition. In addition to monetary awards for Best of Show, and first, second and third places, the Best of Show winner is purchased every year to be included in Arts Clayton's permanent collection.
Our judges panel, including Melanie Davis and Ashley Waldron of Davis Waldron will perform the difficult task of choosing the winners of this year's show. Arts Clayton strives every year to assemble a group of judges with backgrounds and styles as varied as the artists and artwork we display.
Davis Waldron is owned and operated by Melanie Davis and Ashley Waldron Hope, both native to the Atlanta area. They hold BFA degrees from the University of Georgia's Lamar Dodd School of Art in photography and illustration, respectively, and are working artists. Davis has career experience in design and photography and has worked throughout the country. Waldron has worked and studied throughout the U.S., including graduate study in photography in Italy and art history at New York University. Davis and Waldron met while studying at UGA and reconnected in 2004 to open their fine art business of exhibiting and consulting on photography.

August 5 - September 2
Science and art are sister disciplines. The work of the scientist and artist involves exploration, discovery and method. Science has used visual means to communicate knowledge dating back to astronomical observations. Historically artists have been inspired by science and have employed scientific methods in developing materials and techniques.
The exhibition shows that scientific and artistic points of view are compatible and each of the four artists uses science as the foundation for their work with a broad range of scientific disciplines represented.
Two of the artists work within a medical and anatomical context. Marti Hand explores biological science, the pharmaceutical/medical interface and its relation to health and Ann Rowles uses the deceptively benign techniques of crochet and knitting to explore disturbances of the body. Judy Parady chooses lyrical words used by particle physicists as a source for visual interpretations of the invisible in painting and three dimensional works. Mary O'Horo draws from themes found in new physics and astrophysics. These associations become translated into an abstract language which creates it own reality.
This body of work offers a unique interpretation of scientific themes and an opportunity to consider the continuing influence of science in the arts.
Marti Hand: "Topics in science and medicine are the main focus of interest for my work. I am fascinated with how biological sciences, pharmaceutical and medical industries interface, interact and are utilized to combat, cure and prevent illnesses and diseases."
Ann Rowles: "My work investigates the human body as it intersects with culture, history, and psyche. I am especially interested in fat, aging, and otherwise culturally despised bodies. The material substance of the body intrigues me: skin, flesh and bones, systems and processes, organs and vessels. I am currently caring for my elderly mother. The health conditions that concern her are a topic for my work: "Porosity," a crocheted spine-like form, reflects the ravages of Osteoporosis; "Noose" and "Snare" suggest the digestive track, a subject of my mother's frequent complaints and obsessions.
Judy Parady: "Imagining the invisible world of the atom, with its particles and energy fields, is the folly of my current series. Playing with the evocative language physicists use to label quarks and their ilk I create vision where none yet exists. Up, Down, Top, Bottom, Strange, Beauty, Truth."
Mary O'Horo: "Modern physics offers an engaging view of existence. It suggests and reveals order, elegance, simplicity and paradox. These images are associations, fragments and inventions inspired by physics that examines both the macro scale universe and the microscopic universe. I use an abstract visual language to explore these realms."

The Exhibiting artists were truly inspired by the June/July theme "Out of the Box."
