Completed in July, 2007, the Arts Clayton Mural is located on the side of the Arts Clayton Gallery building, 136 S. Main Street, Jonesboro, GA 30236. The Mural represents the beginning of what Arts Clayton Executive Director, Linda Summerlin hopes to be the first of many in the city of Jonesboro.
"Our hope is to become a mural city, like Colquitt, GA. Murals are cultural assets which tell a story about our area and collective history. We are very excited to be able to tell these stories, both to the community and visitors alike."
The four 12' x 12' panels, created by Griffin based artist Shannon Lake, depict stories of Jonesboro in the 1940s-1950s. The murals were inspired by the stories told in the novel Separate Fountains, written by Jonesboro native Patti Wilson Byars.
Visit Shannon Lake's website for information about the artist, his murals and other paintings.
Patti Wilson Byars' book, Separate Fountains, is available for purchase at the Arts Clayton Gallery. For more information on Ms. Byars and Separate Fountains, you may visit her site.
Note: The news stories relating to the mural were removed from the original site, so the In the News section has been removed. We apologize for any inconvenience.
The Art Clayton Mural project is made possible in part through grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the City of Jonesboro and the Clayton County Board of Commissioners. Additional support is being provided by the Arts Clayton Board of Directors and the Clayton County Convention and Visitors Bureau. Additional funding is provided by private donations from the community.
