It’s official! The Smithsonian Institution comes to Historic Main Street Jonesboro. Join the ribbon cutting and grand opening and a preview of this unique interactive exhibit - the Smithson Institution’s “HOMETOWN TEAMS: HOW SPORTS SHAPE AMERICA.” Featuring Jonesboro’s hometown swimming champion and Olympic Gold Medalist Steve Lundquist.


Exhibit opens - free to public 
Arts Clayton Gallery 06/25/2016 - 10am - 4pm

Be among the first to experience this unique touring exhibit. Arts Clayton is the only metro location and is the 3rd stop on the “HOMETOWN TEAMS” tour in Georgia. Open free to the public during regular Special Gallery hours: 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday, and 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday. Closed Sunday and Holidays. Hear stories & interviews with community leaders about their involvement with sports and the “hometown” significance of the 1996 Olympics. Special programming throughout June/July. Filmed as a service of Clayton County Access Television TV23/99, a partner in Jonesboro’s “Hometown Teams.”

Artvan's Summer Reading Tour with Libraries
Beginning Wednesday, July 6

A partnership of “Hometown Teams,” ArtVan mobile reading & literacy initiative, and the Clayton County Libraries’ Summer Reading Program. Children will make an Olympic torch and Olympic ring set while discussing how to accomplish their dreams with a hero’s heart. Based on the book “Olympig: The Triumphant Story of an Underdog” by Victoria Jamieson. Dates & Times vary:

Coach Curry and Carolyn Curry Reception

In partnership with Georgia Humanities, a special reception hosting Coach Bill Curry and Carolyn Curry – Honorary Spokespersons for the Georgia tour of “Hometown Teams.” Also celebrates the 20th Anniversary of the 1996 Centennial Olympics Torch Relay and Inaugural Beach Volleyball competition in Clayton County and the City of Jonesboro. 770-473-5831.

Let's Go Fishing! Youth and Adult Fishing Derby

Sports drama about a gymnast who overcomes family difficulties to pursue his Olympic dream. Starts at dusk at Jonesboro’s new Lee Street Park, so don’t forget to bring snacks and a chair! Free outdoor movies in neighborhood parks are a special program of Clayton County Parks & Recreation, a partner with Jonesboro on the Smithsonian's “Hometown Teams.”


Tailgate Party

Spend an evening in the new Lee Street Park recognizing local sports heroes including Clayton County’s D.J. Shockley – a UGA and Falcons standout. The Tailgate Party will celebrate the success of winning teams and athletes of all ages, cheerleaders, bands, booster clubs, families and friends. Featuring concessions, field games & fun!

Mark your calendar to experience the Smithsonian's newest touring exhibit in the Gallery and any of our community events listed below.  Arts Clayton is the third stop on the tour through Georgia, and one of only 11 counties hosting this unique exhibit.  Come as a family, bring your friends, but definitely come to experience Smithsonian's "Hometown Teams" close to home - on Main Street in Jonesboro!
